"Technology is neither good nor bad; nor is it neutral," said tech historian Melvin Kranzberg. In recent years AI has been proving him right again, as the many benefits of these technologies are undercut by a plethora of negative human effects. They range from unfair biases in hiring algorithms to concerns about surveillance capitalism to social polarization from online filter bubbles. The tech industry has been scrambling to respond, so far without much success. Can AI better reflect human values? How do we make that happen?
